Buddy Building Camp, LLC

The Buddy-Building Camp is a five-week summer, day program developed by Dr. Lesli Preuss to help families who have young children who struggle in more mainstream camp programs. The philosophy of the program, developed from her 15 years of experience as a child psychologist, is to use sports, arts and nature to help children with social and emotional delays overcome some of their difficulties. For ten years the program has been successful in accomplishing these goals.

The participants learn the basic skills required to participate in a minimum of five typical sports (e.g., soccer, basketball, tennis) and through this learn team-building skills, sportsmanship, conflict resolution, and cooperative play. In addition, the kids are exposed to many of the museums in the city through fun activities such as scavenger hunts. We also spend as much time as possible outdoors exploring nature, playing at the playgrounds and exercising. The camp works on a reward based system wherein the campers earn tickets for using their buddy-building skills that can then be cashed in for prizes.

We truly focus on the social and emotional development of each child with an emphasis on social skills such as conflict resolution, being a good sportsman, cooperative play, anger management, and communication skills. Moreover, each family is met with as regularly as needed to develop individualized plans and goals for each camper.

The camp is purposefully kept relatively small in order to provide each child with the individual attention he needs while also being in a peer setting large enough to practice the skills on which he needs to work.
